BUSINESS INNOVATION AND INVESTMENT PROGRAM
The Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188)
replaced most other Australian business and investment visas in 2012. This visa is for people who want to own and manage a new or existing business in Australia, or to invest in Australia.
The Business Innovation and Investment visa program is a two stage process:
Stage 1: The Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188) provides temporary residence in Australia for up to four years and will allow the applicant and their family to move to Australia to undertake business or investment activity.
Stage 2: The Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass888) provides permanent residence in Australia which can be applied for after the applicant has fulfilled the requirements of their provisional visa.
The subclass 188 visa is split into 4 streams, each catering to a different category of businessperson or investor.
1. The Business Innovation stream is for people who want to own and manage a new or existing business in Australia.
2. The Investor stream is for people who want to make a designated investment of at least AUD1.5 million in an Australian State or Territory and maintain business and investment activity in Australia.
3. The Significant Investor stream is for people who are willing to invest at least AUD5 million into complying significant investments in Australia and want to maintain business and investment activity in Australia.
4. The Premium Investor stream is for people who are willing to invest at least AUD15 million into complying premium investments in Australia and maintain business and investment activity in Australia. This visa allows the applicant to move to permanent residence in a shorter timeframe.
Eligibility
You might be able to get this visa if:
you are nominated by a state or territory government or Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
you are invited to apply
you (and all members of your family unit) meet certain health and character requirements
you meet the additional requirements for the stream in which you apply.
